Baz Luhrmann’s bringing back the sequins and taffeta of his 1992 classic in a world premiere of Strictly Ballroom The Musical.
Rehearsals are well underway for the production, which features a cast and crew of Gatsby proportions. The production reunites much of the film’s production team, including co-writer Craig Pearce, choreographer John “Cha Cha” O’Connell and set and costume designer Catherine Martin. Martin returns from an Oscar high, having taken out the Best Costume Design and Best Production Design categories for Gatsby last year.
When it comes to the music, Luhrmann is also joined by his Gatsby and Tourism Australia partner in crime, arranger and orchestrator Elliott Wheeler, ARIA Award winning artist Sia, and Eddie Perfect, who is known for his work in Offspring and Shane Warne: The Musical and US songwriters David Foster and Diane Warren.
Foster is a winner of major golden statues, including 16 Grammies, an Emmy and a Golden Globe, and Warren has written songs for the likes of Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin and Whitney Houston. So if you treasure the film, the original elements (including the beloved track Love is in the Air) are here to stay – but prepare to also hear new compositions from this prize-winning team.
If you can’t wait to see the drama of camp and competitive ballroom dancing reenacted in all of its diamante-ed glory, the wait’s not long now. Previews start next Tuesday 25 March and opening night is Saturday 12 April.
