If you have an idea for a short-term creative project, but your laptop-in-the-dining room or friend’s backyard just isn’t cutting it, share your idea with us and we might have a space for you. We’re looking for anyone needing a rehearsal space, production office, set build, or workshop space – you name it.
Originally, we offered short-term creative spaces through a register. However, we have now opened the application process up by engaging creative space specialists Brand X to help us find short-term projects to fill temporary spaces.
We are asking you to let us know what you need and if there is a space that suits, it could be yours for $100 per week on a short-term lease. It could be an office or retail space in any location, of any size, for a lease period of one, three, six or 12 months.
So far, Brand X has helped us accommodate three new groups – Intersect Arts at a former skincare clinic on Bourke Street, Work-Shop at 104 Oxford Street and The Design Residency at 32-34 Kellet St, Potts Point.

What is Work-Shop?
Work-Shop was set up by Chester Garcia and Matt Branagan in June 2013. Our aim was to set up a creative space where people can come together, learn and be inspired. We offer affordable short courses – anything from street art to pickling, to terrarium making.
What type of space do you look for and why?
We want a space with character that reflects creativity and inspiration, which are very important to us.
How did you hear about the program and what’s the application process like?
The City has shown great interest in Work-Shop since we began and we recently worked together on the Garage Sale Trail. The application process was easy and Lauren (who looks after the program) was super helpful. I’d recommend anyone looking to set up a business to find out more, the creative spaces program really gives young businesses a leg up!
What’s next for you guys?
We’re super excited to open the doors to the Oxford Street space titled “Work-Shop: Makery”. It’s a new concept for us that involves retailing young makers’ wares, as well as hosting a few feature workshops and other events. We have also just picked up the keys to our new HQ in Redfern – which will include new co-working and makers’ spaces and a café – so it’s going to be a very busy January!
